The Oaks Assisted Living Becomes a Tobacco-Free Campus

FRUITA, CO (September 22, 2014) – In keeping with one of their goals to provide a healthy and safe environment, Family Health West implemented a comprehensive tobacco-free policy for all of their campuses effective January 15, 2014. The tobacco-free policy applies to all patients, visitors, medical staff members, vendors, and employees. This means there is no smoking or tobacco use allowed in any building, parking area, grounds, or parked vehicles on hospital grounds.  As of October 1, 2014, this policy is will be adopted by The Oaks Assisted Living Facility which was previously excluded due to the number of smoking residents.

“Though we originally excluded The Oaks residents in the policy, we now find it imperative that we are consistent facility-wide,” said Administrator of The Oaks Assisted Living Facility, Jason Davis.  “Education materials and services that offer tobacco cessation support and treatment will be made available to the residents.”

According to the U.S. Surgeon General, there is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke; and tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease in the United States. “As a healthcare organization, our objective is to protect the health of those in our community while promoting a culture of healthy living,” said Family Health West Chief Nursing Officer, Lori Henderson. “Making Family Health West a tobacco-free campus aligns with our mission to enhance quality of life through professional healthcare and related services.”
