Fruita, CO (August 25, 2014) – Family Health West announces Mark Reese as the winner of the bi-annual Art for Health competition. Mark is a local photographer specializing in landscape, wildlife, architectural, and sports photography. The Art for Health Reception will take place Thursday, September 4, from 4:30–6:00pm in the Family Health West Hospital Lobby.
Mark is a self-taught, fine art landscape photographer who has been influenced by the likes of Monet, Van Gogh, Degas, Wright, Russell, Free, Remington, Adams, and Mitchum. He is interested in sports, night and street photography; documenting people in their everyday lives; and macro and abstract photography. “My job is to capture the proverbial tree that falls in the forest… to capture its ‘sound’ and the feeling it creates.”
Growing up a military brat gave Mark the opportunity to live in several places and shoot a variety of photos. He started taking photos when he was in the third grade and bought his first professional camera when he was 18.
Mark’s career was in telecommunications. He built cell towers across the country, owned several companies and worked as an independent contractor. He loved what he did for a living and was very good at it.
In 2008, Mark’s life changed drastically when he was in a devastating accident. The truck he was driving rolled and he sustained several injuries including a closed head injury. Mark developed migraines and could no longer work in telecommunications. He had a lot of time to think about what is important, “Each one of these moments kept me humble realizing just how delicate and fragile life is.”
“We are thrilled to have Mark’s work in our Hospital,” added Angelina Salazar, Director of Community Relations. “Our patients, staff, families, and friends all have the opportunity to not only view what our local artists are doing, but to experience an environment that promotes healing. We thank the Fruita Arts and Culture Board for selecting us as a venue for this very important endeavor.”
