ESOPHAGOGASTRODUODENOSCOPY (EGD)

If you are on any of the following blood thinning medications, please call Tammy right away 970-858-9894 ext. 7128.  You may need to go off these medications.

Prescription

  •  Aggrenox
  • Lovenox (Heparin)
  • Coumadin, Warfarin (warfarin sodium)
  • Plavix (clopidogrel bisulfate)
  • Eliquis (Apixaban)
  • Pradaxa (dabigatran)
  • Xarelto (Rivaroxaban)
  • Arixtra (Fonda parinux)

This is not an all-inclusive list.

Most anti-inflammatory medications have blood thinning properties.

If you are uncertain about a medication you are taking, please call to talk to Tammy.

All patient taking a GLP-1 medications need to stop that medication either 1 week or 24 hours before the procedures.

  • If you are taking the medication weekly it needs to be stopped at least 1 week prior the procedure
  • If you are taking it daily, it needs to be stopped 24 hours prior to the procedure

These medications are in place because they can delay the gastric emptying and increase aspiration risks. If food remain in the stomach or intestines/colon and your prep may not work as well and you might have to repeat all this.

These medications include

  • Dulaglutide: Brand name Trulicity
  • Exendtide: Brand names Byetta and Bydureon
  • Liraglutide: Brand name Victoza
  • Semaglutide: Brand names Ozempic and Rybelsus
  • Tirzepatide: Brand name Mounjaro or Zepbound

***If you are having an EGD- BRAVO you must stop your Proton pump inhibitors (PPI), Reflux/Acid reducers must be stopped 3 days prior to procedure and the 2 days while you are completing this test.

If this is not done the test will not be accurate, we want to see how much acid you are producing and these medications decrease the acid.

Examples: Prilosec, Omeprazole, Nexium, Esomeprazole, Protonix, Pantoprazole, Zantac, Ranitidine, Pepcid, Famotidine, Tums, Rolaids, Alka-Seltzer, Milk of Magnesia, and Pepto-Bismol

Prep Instructions:

NOTHING TO EAT OR DRINK AFTER MIDNIGHT. If procedure is scheduled after 12:00pm then YOU MAY HAVE ONLY CLEAR LIQUIDS THAT MORNING UP UNTIL 5 HOURS BEFORE PROCEDURE

Clear liquids include: Anything that you can see through// NO SOLID FOODS; DO NOT drink milk; DO NOT eat or drink anything colored red or purple; DO NOT drink alcoholic beverages

Things you may have that are considered clear liquids:

Water, clear broth, apple juice, white grape juice, coffee or tea (do not use any dairy or non-dairy creamer), Jell-O without added fruit or toppings, popsicles. Nothing red or purple.

Have a responsible adult to drive you home the day of the procedure. You will NOT be allowed to drive yourself home or leave unaccompanied in a Taxi or Uber due to the sedation given. You will be advised to rest at home following the procedure and not to go back to work. Please refrain from making any important personal or business decision the day of your procedure.
