Prepare for your upper endoscopy (EGD) at Family Health West

Before your upper endoscopy (EGD), make sure to read and follow these instructions to make sure that your appointment goes as smoothly as possible and does not need to be rescheduled. 

Important Note

Remember that your procedure will take place at FHW Outpatient Procedure Center, located at 300 W Ottley Ave. On the day of your procedure, you will need to head here. Do not come to the FHW Primary Care building.

Important Medication Information

If you are taking any of the following medications and have not yet discussed them with your doctor and you are scheduled for a upper endoscopy (EGD), contact us right away at 970-858-9894 so that your medications can be properly adjusted.

  • Blood Thinners:
    • Coudamin
    • Plavix
    • Xarelto
    • Pradaxa
    • Eliquis
    • Effient
    • Ticlid
    • Agryli
    • Other blood-thinning medication

Insulin & diabetes medications

  • Please call and discuss your diabetes medications with your prescribing physician. They will have the exact adjustments that they would like you to make. Here is some information to help guide you:
    • If you take any pills that lower your blood sugar, DO NOT take them on the day of your procedure.
    • If you take regular insulin, do not take it on the day of the procedure.
    • If you take long-acting insulin, take half of your usual dose on the morning of the procedure.
    • If you are taking other insulin preparations or have questions, please contact your prescribing physician.

If you take aspirin, it is ok to take it and all other prescribed medications with a sip of water on the day of your upper endoscopy (EGD).

Pre-endoscopy instructions

7 days before endoscopy:
Stop taking iron, or Pepto Bismol.
Please note that Tylenol (acetaminophen) does not interfere with the procedure. Please
consult your doctor if you have any questions about your medication, especially if you
have been told not to stop taking these drugs suddenly without medical advice.
5 days before endoscopy:
Stop taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (e.g. Motrin, Advil (ibuprofen), Feldene,
Naprosyn, Nuprin, Celebrex and Vioxx).
1 day before endoscopy:
Do not eat any solid food after midnight, the night before the procedure.
Day of endoscopy:
Nothing to eat or drink at least 8 hours before the procedure.
Medication can be taken 4 hours before examination with little sips of water. DO NOT
TAKE ANY ANTACIDS OR CARAFATE BEFORE THE PROCEDURE or any of the
medications mentioned above
