Family Health West Receives Two Recognitions: Chartis Center for Rural Health Recognizes FHW For Performance Leadership; The Colorado Sun Recognizes FHW Rehabilitative Therapy Program

Family Health West (FHW) announces it has been recognized with a 2023 Performance Leadership Award for excellence in the category of Patient Perspective. Compiled by the Chartis Center for Rural Health, the Performance Leadership Awards honor top quartile performance (i.e., 75th percentile or above) among rural hospitals across America in the categories of quality, outcomes, and/or patient perspective. Only nine rural hospitals were recognized for this excellence in Colorado, FHW being one of them. (The complete list can be found here.

“It is a testament to our deep commitment to exceptional healing and patient-centered care to receive this recognition,” Dr. Korrey Klein, FHW CEO and President, said. “We don’t treat patients for an outcome of recognition, but when it organically presents itself, it reinforces our standards are high and our caregiving is higher.”

The Performance Leadership Awards are based on the results of the Chartis Rural Hospital Performance INDEX®, the industry’s most comprehensive and objective assessment of rural hospital performance. INDEX data is relied upon by rural hospitals, health systems with rural footprints, hospital associations, and state offices of rural health around the country to measure and monitor performance across several areas impacting hospital operations and finance.

“Wherever we go in rural America, we witness first-hand the commitment, determination, and compassion with which rural hospitals serve their communities. Rural healthcare truly is mission-driven,” Michael Topchik, National Leader, The Chartis Center for Rural Health, said.

Family Health West is the only hospital in Mesa County with a rural healthcare designation.
In addition to the Chartis Center recognition, FHW was named the 2023 best Therapy Program on the Western Slope by The Colorado Sun’s readers. Earlier this year, The Colorado Sun readers were asked to vote for their favorite businesses across the state, and Family Health West was selected.

This recognition from patients highlights the far-reaching extent of patient care provided by Family Health West, along with the variety of Rehabilitative Therapy programs offered. Those diverse programs include inpatient hospital rehab; outpatient rehab; occupational, physical, and speech therapies, driver rehab, pediatric rehab, and more.

“We appreciate the recognition for the hard work, specialty skills, and professional services our rehab teams provide to our patients,” Brandon Kiser, Director of Hospital Rehabilitation, said.

John Weirath, Director of Pediatric Rehabilitation, added, “We greatly appreciate this recognition for both outpatient and pediatric services across all disciplines for rehab therapy services along with our fantastic front desk staff who create a great experience for our patients.”

The FHW Pediatric Rehabilitative Therapy program is the largest between Denver and Salt Lake City. It serves about 800 individual pediatric patients annually with about 19,000 treatments coming from all across Western Colorado. In addition, Adult Rehabilitative Therapy includes unique programs like the Driver Rehabilitation Program assisting aging drivers in keeping their independence while maintaining safety on the roads, or assisting in gaining the driver’s independence back after a major medical incident like a stroke or amputation. All of the FHW Rehabilitative Therapy programs are offered to both outpatients and through the FHW Hospital and Rehabilitative Therapy Clinic, located in Fruita, Colorado.
