What is a Driver Rehabilitation Specialist?

Driver rehabilitation specialists work with people of all ages and abilities, exploring transportation solutions for drivers with special needs, medical conditions, and aging.

Driver Rehabilitation Specialists:

  • Conduct a thorough evaluation of abilities and limitations.
  • Provide driver remediation and training.
  • Assist with navigating the state driver licensing process for adaptive driving or return to driving needs.
  • Work closely with mobility equipment dealers to ensure appropriate adaptive equipment installation and fitting.

Our Certified Driver Rehabilitation Specialist (CDRS) is an Occupational Therapist who has completed additional training and education in driver rehabilitation. The most knowledgeable of the specialists is CDRS. Family Health West provides the only Driving Rehabilitation Program and Services between Salt Lake City, UT, and Denver.

Neurological Rehabilitation

Neurological rehabilitation under the care of an occupational therapist consists of supporting and facilitating an individual to be as independent as possible in their daily life.

For some, this may involve a focus on improving reduced cognitive functions such as planning or memory. For others, it may focus on removing physical barriers to independence through well-designed housing, assistive technology, or equipment.

Occupational Therapists also provide vision therapy for those whose injuries result in double vision or visual field loss. Intervention is always goal-oriented, client-specific, and focused on maximizing and enabling independence, no matter what form this may take.

What Can a Hand Therapist Do For Me?

Hand Therapists bridge the gap from medical management of upper extremity conditions to successful recovery, allowing individuals to function normally in their daily lives. Hand therapists provide non-operative interventions, preventative care, and post-surgical rehabilitation for various upper extremity disorders, from simple fingertip injuries to complex tendon transfers.

Patients with chronic conditions such as arthritis or neurologic conditions like stroke can benefit from therapy through education on joint protection and energy conservation, with recommendations for adaptive equipment or devices to improve function. A hand therapist employs various techniques and tools, including activity and exercise programs, custom orthotic fabrication, management of pain and swelling, and wound and scar care.

Hand Therapy at Family Health West is the art and science of evaluating and treating injuries and conditions of the upper extremities. It uses several therapeutic interventions to help return a person to their highest level of function. Hand therapy has evolved to needing a specialist with the knowledge and experience to manage the challenging recovery of complex hand and upper extremity injuries.
